Exploring the top causes of divorce

On Behalf of | Mar 11, 2024 | Family Law |

Marriage is a huge commitment and very few relationships do not face troubles at some point. Some couples are able to navigate obstacles and build a stronger bond, while others don’t make it.

Modern life can be stressful for married couples, and there are several factors that can contribute to divorce. Outlined below are some of the more common causes of divorce.

Decreased effort

As mentioned, it takes effort to make a relationship work. No marriage can remain in a “honeymoon period” forever. There will be difficult times and couples will need to work through them together. This takes compromise, good communication and effort. A lack of commitment to working on the relationship is cited in as many as 72% of divorce cases.

Financial issues

Going from being financially independent to operating as a couple can take some adjustment. While each spouse should retain some financial independence, couples do need to pool their resources and open up about debts and other financial obligations. When one spouse shuts the other out in terms of finances, this can cause conflict in the marriage. Financial disputes play a role in up to 30% of all divorce cases.

High levels of conflict

Most couples argue from time to time but the frequency and scale of conflicts can differ. Constant arguments can make couples feel like they have nothing to look forward to. Heated arguments can make one or both spouses feel scared. When a relationship becomes toxic, this is often a sign that divorce is on the horizon.

If your marriage isn’t working out, then you may need to start thinking about how to protect your interests. One of the first advisable steps is to seek as much legal information as possible.
